technical difficulties

31 Jan

Dear interwebs

You know when people draw on photographs – like put a moustache on a photo of john howard, or a ring around a whale they saw while they were whale watching – how do they do that? Is it easy? I’ve just spent about two hours trying to work it out and I can’t, and google isn’t doing it for me.

Yours in anticipation

Er, sometimes the editing software that came with your cmaera has that feature… or some other photoshoppy thing would do it… I’m not much help, as I’ve never done it, though the software I got with my Olympus claims to do the job.

You need the software. Photoshop will do it but it is exxy (if you actually pay for it). microsoft publisher will let you, or you can do it with Paint. (Paint seems to come a sa basic on most computers) You need to copy and paste the pic into paint and then use the brush or pencil tool to do your graffito.

    Hey! That was quick!

I’ve searched my software (canon) and can’t find it anywhere, but didn’t think of paint. Hopefully, I haven’t deleted it, when I was trying to make more room on this increasingly useless (and sworn-at) computer.

I’m using piknic (or however they spell it), but I’ve only found arrows there.

    Thanks again dudes

Do you have Office on the computer? If so, there is a Picture Manager on that which can be used for those effects.

Photoshop is what you need – and it’s very expensive, so, what I suggest is that you “take up” with someone who has it so they can “slip you” a copy.
    I’m not suggesting anything illicit.

    of course.

MSPaint is for kids, but you don’t need photoshop – I use it at work and use the free paint.net at home. It’s excellent.

When you find out, tell me, OK.

I’m still kinda reeling that you’re in the Middle East. Somehow I missed the memo on that momentous event.

    God it must be hot.

Open Source has GIMP and its FREE and just as sophisticated as PShop.

But best of all is Irfanview – small, light, easy to use and nearly FREE – used to be postcard ware inearly days – you sent him a postacard. But he got so many its now free with a donation if you like. It’s a world class program. Limited but will do what you want with paintbrush.

Picassa does a lot of stuff, and it’s free. Also you can do the weird moustache things on flickr, by clicking on create – if you really want to put moustaches on. I’m clueless as to why you’d want to.

Oh, GIMP seems much more complicated to me than the also open source paint.net.

But have a play with them all.
