Do you know one of the hard things…

22 Aug

…about not having a job for a while, and also being kind of on the edges of your desired ‘career’ is that bit where you have to put in ‘three referees’, because I’m a hard worker and all that, it’s just that the mister is about the only one who sees it.

Or, as they say on facebook…ThirdCat is pondering the ‘list three referees’ space on the form which needs to be lodged pretty soon.

Don’t you have referees from your previous position?

    Partner, elder child, younger child.

Best of luck, Thirdcat. As they say on Facebook… Rosanna hopes it all goes well.

I’ll do it. I can make stuff up under pressure.

I’ve just read your comment on Pea Soup and the dog-fell-off-the-cliff post, and just wanted to say that it made me chuckle.

So what is this desired career of which you speak and how is the stand-up going?

or as they say on Facebook: Joe Randomperson has joined the group I Like Scratching Wombats Even Without Informed Consent.

Can you list the referees from last Saturday’s Collingwood v. Demons game?

Nick – I’m putting in an application to arts sa to possibly have some money for my next writing project. You need three referees who can talk about your writing. This is hard! Though SQ would, as she suggests, make an excellent referee for me. And Suse, no, because everyone knows that Victorian umpires are biased against South Australians (and that sentences goes on and on about and that’s why Andrew McLeod didn’t win the bronlow blah-de-blah).

Oh, and the stand-up is going really well. I have no idea what to make of that development in my life.

Plenty of us could do it. Easy to prattle about authorial voice and individual sensibility and subtlety of rhythm and a keen eye for observation and a certain ability to let a story develop in its own time which is actually a strongly controlled use of the narrative art..

but we have all the force of a feather duster dropped in a boiling copper.

I make that seven cliches in sentence two, btw. It may even be a record for moi.

And your website is a darn good read, of course, but – like many blogs – it would hurt my head to really articulate why in a non-cliched way.

That is the trouble with a new form of public intimacy. The cliches haven’t clustered around it yet.
